Brewing up ‘bicycle beer clones’
“Riding bikes, like drinking craft beer, makes a statement about individuality and lifestyle,” says Pike Brewing founder Charles Finkel in the latest Brew Your Own cover story “Bicycle Beer Clones.”
Glenn BurnSilver from Alaska does a nice job making the connection between craft beer drinkers and bicycle-themed beers, such as the Boulder Beer Singletrack and the Phillips Slipstream Cream Ale.
So why combine beer and bikes?
“For me, beer is the ultimate electrolyte replenishment system. It is the perfect thing to charge the battery after a great ride,” says Phillips Brewery owner Matt Phillips.
“After I am done with a beautiful mountain bike ride through the cottonwoods, nothing really sounds better than a craft beer,” adds Squatters brewmaster and former bike racer Jennifer Talley.
BurnSilver himself provides the most obvious explanation:
“Bike riding leads to thirstiness, which needs quenching, and what better beverage to do that than beer,” BurnSilver writes.
